Tharakan, Kamalakshan and Vidvanmali are demons who got powers from Lord Brahmma and started to trouble Devas. Lord Shiva decided to fight against the demons to safeguard the Devas. But the Lord forgot to pray to Lord Vinayaka before he starts his fight. Lord Vinayaka broke the axis of Lord's chariot and created vignam (obstacle) to Lord's purpose. Later as the Lord realized his mistake, Lord Vinayaka helped in Lord's mission. Hence this place is known as Achu Iru Bagam (the place where the axis broke).
Thirugnana Sambandhar. This temple is the 262nd Devara sthalam .
The Lord is Swaymbu Murthi. The lord has showed His marriage darshan to Sage Agasthiya in this place also. The asuras Tharakan and Vidyunmali stand as "Dwara Palaka"s (security guards) here. There are two separate moolavars and two consort dieties. This Lord is worshipped by Sages Kanva and Gauthama. There is a separate shrine for "Achchumuri Vinayagar" who broke Shiva's chariot's axis. Saint Arunagirinadhar has started his "Thirupugazh" hymns by praising this "Achchiru Vinayaka". A Pandiya king got his chariot's axis broken during his Siva sthala yatra, finds a golden chameleon which, when chased hid in a Kondrai tree. The Lord revealed his play as chameleon and ordered the king to build a temple for the Swayambu lingam under the tree. The king handed over the project to a sage named "Thrinethradaari"( three eyed sage). The sage built two sanctum sanctorums as the lord ordered the sage too, to build a temple. There is a separate shrine for this sage too.
This Lord blesses good adminstrative skills, peace of mind and removes the obstacles in one's career. As the lord is in the form of letters - "Akshara", He blesses the devotees to shine in education.
Devotees offer special abishekam to Lord with vastras. Special pujas are done on New moon days. It is believed that a prayer to "Achumuri Vinayaka" will clear the obstacles in one's endeavours.
