When Mother Parvathi closed the eyes of Lord Shiva with her hands, the entire universe came to a standstill as Lord's eyes are the Sun and Moon. Lord confirmed the sin of Parvathy and adviced her to do penance. He assured to join Her in the Yogavanam here. The Mother completed her penance, made a Linga in sand and worshipped Him standing by one leg. The Lord took His consort. This Yogavanam is now named Keezhapazhuvur. As She did penance, Her name is Arundhavanayaki (thavam in tamil means penance)
Thirugnana Sambandhar, Vallalar and Arunagirinathar. This is the 55th temple of the 274 devara sthalams.
A fragrant oil (Sambirani thailam) is applied on the Shivalinga. As the Lord is too small, a cup is placed upside down to facilitate darshan. Sage Parasurama worshipped this Lord to repent for his sin of killing his own mother. The tank he created is called Parasuram tank. As this place was once rich in Pazhu or Aalamaram (Banyan tree) the name is Alandurayar for Lord Shiva here. On Panguni 18, the Sun worship the Lord with his rays.
People pray here to unite with their separated life partners and release from serious sins. People pray to recover from the sin of Brhmahathi dosam.
After taking bath in Parasurama Theertham, Abishekam is performed to Lord Shiva.
