According to Purana, Lord Krishna went to Duryodhana as envoy for Pandavas to seek five houses for them. Duryodhana wanted to kill Krishna to stop His support for Pandavas. He made a deep pit, placed boxers underneath and concealed it with a seat. When Krishna sat, though he fell into the pit, he took His Vishwarupa (Omni-form in unimaginable power) and knocked down the boxers. After many years of the end of the Kurukshetra war, King Janamejaya came to Sage Vasampayana to hear the glory of the Bharatha story and Lord Krishna. The king wished to have the Vishwarupa darshan of the Lord (as he appeared sitting on the pit made by Duryodhana) The sage adviced Janmejaya to perform penance in this place. Lord rewarded the king with His darshan in this place as the envoy of the Pandavas.
Mangalasaasanam (hymns) by Boodhazhwar, Peyazhwar, Thirumazhisai Azhwar and Thirumangai Azhwar. This is the 49th temple among the divya desams.
Lord Krishna is 25 feet tall in sitting posture and the Vimana above the sanctum sanctorum is called Badra Vimana. Lord Krishna is praised as "Pandava Dhootha Perumal" as He went as an envoy for Pandava brothers. He is mentioned as "Dhoodha Hari" in the epigraphs here. He also granted vision and darshan to blind king Dritharashtra in this place. Vaishanavite Yajnamurthy held debate with Sri Ramanuja here and surrendered to him after 18 days. Rohini Devi worshipped Lord Krishna here and married Moon-(Chandra) here. Of the 27 star Devis, Moon wedded Rohini with Jnana Sakthi (wisdom powers) followed by Kruthika with Agni (fire) powers. He married other Devis later. It is said that Rohini is still worshipping Lord Krishna formlessly who granted wisdom powers to her.
It is strongly believed that anyone born in Rohini star will be relieved of any hardship when they pray to this Lord.
Krishna here is pressing His feet with his Viswapada Yoga powers. Hence those doing Adi Pradikshina (circumambulating step by step), Anga Pradaikshina (rolling on the floor) will have their 72000 nadis (veins) activated and overcome life's struggeles. Devotees are adviced to pray on Wednesdays, Saturdays and on Rohini Stary days, Ashtami (eighth day from new moon or full moon days) and on the 8th of each month.
Sri Krishna Jayanthi, Deepavali, Mukkotti Ekadasi, Panguni Uthiram, Sattrumarai Utsav.
