History of the place

Sage Vyakrapada came to Omapuliyur and prayed to Lord to grant him Lord's dance darshan in Chidambaram. Hence, due to the significance of his visit and prayer, the Lord is named as Pranava Vyakrapureeswara. There is another event telling the greatness of the temple. TWo virgins from the celestial word came down to earth as swine and a human due to the curse of Sage Durvasa. They were chased by a tiger. They ran to escape and reached Gowri Theertham. A woman, after a bath in the tank was drying her hair. A few drops of water from her hair fell on the virgins restoring them to their original forms.

Temple History, Speciality, Miracle and Greatness

This is a Swayambu Jupiter temple. As many homas (puja) were performed, this place has its name Omapuliyur. Also it is said that as Mother learnt about Pranava, it is called Umapuliyur. When Mother Parvathi was distracted during her lesson on Pranava by Lord Shiva, She was cursed to be born in earth and was adviced to do penance. After severe penance, the Lord (as Dakshinamurthy) completed the teaching. There are no Navagrahas (9 planets) shrine here. Lord Dakshinamurthy graces in a maha mandap between the Lord and the Mother shrines. A king Sadananda, a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva got his leprosy cured with a dip in the holy Varndhanan tank here.

Devotee perform abishekam and archanas to Lord Dakshinamurthy on Thursdays and Jupiter transition days.

Jupiter transition day is celebrated annually in the temple.

Bus facilities is available to Omapuliyur from Chidambaram and Kattumannarkoil. Also buses from Chennai to Eiyalur pass through this place.
