History of the place

During Arjuna's pilgrimage, he hunted a boar. Lord Shiva appeared as a hunter and fought with him, claiming that it was his boar. Arjuna shot an arrow, and Shiva's head was injured. The bleeding hunter revealed his original form, and Arjuna, who was remorseful, begged for forgiveness. Shiva forgave him and gave him the Pasupathastra. After that, he worshipped Shiva in many places. When he came to this temple and saw the self-manifested Lord Shiva here too, he worshipped Him. Since the Lord appeared as a hunter and bestowed, He was named Thiruvettiswarar ('Vedan' meaning "Hunter" in Tamil). He is also known as Parthaprakaralingam (Partha is another name for Arjuna).

Temple History, Speciality, Miracle and Greatness

The temple has a separate flag post for Shiva, Shanmuga, and Ambika. Goddess Mahalakshmi worshipped Lord Shiva here to marry Lord Vishnu and is depicted on a pillar holding a kalash (sacred pot), anointing Shivalinga.

Lord Ganesha is enshrined separately, and devotees offer coconut garlands and light coconut oil lamps.
Lord Shanmugar is seated on a peacock and has six faces. On every Sashti, 6 flowers, 6 offerings, and 6 fruits are presented, while 6 priests perform the Chatrusamhara Trisathi, a unique puja.
Rahu-Ketu Sthalam: When the demon Swarbhanu drank the nectar from the churning of the milky ocean, the Sun and Moon revealed his act to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu struck the demon with the scoop used for distributing the nectar, thus severing his head and body, but he survived due to the nectar. Lord Shiva transformed him into Rahu (snake body) and Ketu (snake head), granting them planetary status. They are believed to eclipse the Sun and Moon in revenge. Their images appear as snakes on the upper wall opposite the Swami shrine, adorned with a silver shield.
Swami's Speciality: Unlike other Shiva temples, where only the feet of Shiva are taken out for the Arthajama Puja (a late night puja mostly between 9 pm to 10.30 pm by offering specific rituals like bathing the deity, offering food and waving the lamps and typically concluding the day's worship schedule here the full idol enters the Artha Mandapam.
Navagraha Puja: Every morning, a Spatika lingam is placed near the deity along with gems associated with the nine planets. Specific grains and flowers associated with each planet are offered. Mangal Aarti (waving of lamp) is performed to Lord Sun. It is believed that worshipping Lord Shiva during the Rudrathirisathi Archana (300 Shiva mantras) removes planetary afflictions.

Kannappa Nayanar: Arjuna himself was born as a hunter named Kannappa in his next birth as atonement for the hurt he did to Lord Shiva when the Lord appeared as a Hunter during Arjuna's pilgrimage. He sought atonement by offering his eye to Lord Shiva. He also attained the status of Nayanmar by Lord Shiva. Since it is the place where Arjuna worshipped, Kannappa Nayanar is celebrated as the procession deity, and Guru Puja is conducted on the Mrigasirisha star day in Thai month (January mid to February mid).
