King Mahabali, a descendent of devout Prahlada (for whom Perumal took the Narasimha Avtar) was a very generous person but was proud of his quality. To teach him a lesson, the Lord came as a dwarf and sought three feet of land. Mahabali's Guru Sukra understood the Lord's intention and advised the king to deny the request of the dwarf. But Mahabali was stubborn and offered 3 feet land without reluctance. The Lord took his tallest Form and covered the whole earth by one foot, the padala loka (the world below) by the second and asked Mahabali the space for the third foot. The emperor realised his mistake. Without hesitation, he offered his head for the third foot and the Lord placed his foot on his head and pushed him to the Paadala Loka. The Lord gave darshan as both Ulagalanda Perumal and as Aadhisehsa in this place.
Mangalasaasanam (hymns) by Thirumangai Azhwar, Thirumazhisai Azhwar. This temple ranks 51st in place in divya desams.
This is the one of the four Lord Vishnu temples within one temple each ranging among the 108 Divya Desams of Perumal. This place is called Thiru Ooragam, the other three are Thiru Neeragam, Thiru Kaaragam and Thiru Kaarvanam. This is indeed a wonder in India's temple hisotry that four temples are under one roof. The Lord here is in Trivikrama Form facing west under Saagara Srikara Vimana. Emperor Mahabali and Adishesha (the divine serpent) worshipped Perumal in this temple. The Lord graces with His right leg pressed on the ground while the left is scaling up. Sri Adisesha is considered very powerful granting desired boons to the devotees if they pray wholeheartedly.
People pray to get rid of their arrogance and seeking child boon.
Once the wishes are realized, devotees perform Thirumanjanam (Abisheka) and offer porridge (Payasam) for Nivedhana to Perumal and Adhishesha .
