History of the place

In the Kurukshetra battle, Dharma, the eldest of Pandava brothers had to kill Dronacharya - his Guru, without which the Pandavas cannot win. It was decided to make Drona believe that his son Aswathama was killed in the battle. Dharma told Drona that an elephant (also named Aswathama) was killed lowering his tone when he utters the word 'elephant' and raised his voice while telling the name 'Aswathama'. On hearing this, when Drona stopped fighting, Dhrustadyumna killed Drona. Pricked by his lie, Dharma came to this place, performed penance for peace and cleansing. Even before Dharma, Imayavars (Devas) performed penance here and Lord Vishnu gave Darshan and was celebrated as Imayavar Appan - Lord of Devas.
