During the churning of the milk ocean, the was a quarrel between the Devas and the Asuras. To help the Devas, the Lord took Mohini (mesmerizing lady form) avatar, lured the asuras and gave the nectar to Devas. As the Lord took Mohini form (Moham in sanskrit means passion or desire), this place is called Thirumohanavur and now Thirumohur. Later Sage Pulasthiyar wanted to have the darshan of the Lord as Mohini and the Lord granted him darshan. As per his request, the Lord is present here with a mesmerizing form to captivate the hearts of the devotees.

The Sudarsanar ( Chakkrathazhwar) shrine here is an ancient one. The Urchavar (procession deity) has 154 Mantras engraved on it. The Moolavar (presiding deity) has 48 Moolavar is engraved with 48 Ati Devas belonging to mantras. The Lord has 16 hands with 16 weapons, fire crown and in running position. Behind Him is the holy Narasimha Sudarsanam. The word "Aaptan" means Friend. Thus this Lord becomes the best friend to his devotee and also the guide for that soul in its last journey. Though Nammazhwar prayed to all the Lords in the 108 divya desams, it is this Kalamega Perumal who led Nammazhwar to Vaikunta (Salvation).
