This region was ruled by Vrushadharbi, son of Emperor Shibi. The king suffered severe disease and his kingdom was under famine and drought due to curse. When Saptha Rishis called on the king, he demanded complete cure and prosperity of his kingdom in return for his Dhan (dontion). The Rishis grew furious and rejected his alms. The angry king organized a yajna to kill the Rishis. They prayed to Perumal for protection. Lord sent Indira in the form of tiger (Puli in Tamil) and killed the evil spirit. Hence, this place is named Thirupuliyur after this event. Rishis realized Perumal alone is real and everything else is but illusion - Maya. Lord thus came to be known as Mayapiran.
