This Lord Vinayakar is the largest in size in Asia and is sculpted from a single stone. The Lord Ganapathy is dressed with fruits and vegetables weighing about 5 tonnes on Tamil New Year day and these fruits and vegetables are distributed to the devotees as prasad. On Vinayaga Chaturthi, garland made of 3 tonnes of flowers is offered to the Lord who is decorated in Raja Alankaram (Princely dressing).
This Lord - Mundhi Vinayakar is the largest idol in Asia. 21 skilled sculptors have made this idol. The choice of the stone in making this Lord was also not easy. After several searches, the final rock was picked up at a place called Oothukuli near Coimbatore from a pit 20 feet deep and free of any flaw. The sculptors designed the idol there itself with some approximate calculations. The sculptors worked with devotion and dedication like penance and the Lord was completed in 6 years. The idol is 19 feet 10 inches tall and 11 feet 10 inches broad weighing 190 tonnes - 19000 kilograms. He was brought to this spot on a cart specially made for the purpose. A slanting track was made with perfect calculations to lift the idol to the point of installation and it took 18 days. Then the Lord was sculpted intricately in a horizontal position. With no machines, the Lord was installed manually with chains, ropes, and rolling balls. The consecration was presided over by His Holiness Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal in the year 1998.
| This idol of the Lord is sculpted from a single stone and is the largest in size in the whole of Asia. The forehead of the Lord alone is 2.5 feet broad. The trunk of the Lord is right circled (Valampuri in Tamil). Of His four hands, he holds the piece of ivory in the lower right hand, Elephant's goad (Angusa in tamil) in upper right hand, Jack fruit in the left lower hand and Noose (Paasam in tamil) in the left upper hand. The Lord holds a nectar pot (Amrutha Kalasa) on His trunk as a sign of Mother Mahalakshmi - the Goddess of Wealth. The idol is mounted on a peeta (platform) designed as Lotus. There is also a Lotus that adores His left foot. The serpent Vasuki that is tied as belt by the Lord assues His devotees of remedy from the adverse aspects of the serpent planets Rahu and Ketu. This Lord appears as male on right side and female on the left representing Lord Arthanareeswarar. The Lord is under the Peepal tree, faces the east and showers boons on His devotees seeking His grace. |
| Devotees
bring their children on Saraswathi Pooja day and write Pranava (OM) on their
tongue before they start their educational journey. They also pray here for removal of all adverse planetary effects (as the Lord Ganapathy is the Lord of all planets). HE is also worshipped for wedding and child boons and fulfilling the devotees aspirations in life. Devotees strongly believe that worshipping this Lord brings all kinds of wealth (Ashta Aiswaryam - 8 forms of wealth) and life full of happiness (Pathinaru Perugal - 16 forms of happiness). |
