History of the place

Arjuna - the best archer among the Pandavas was advised by Lord Krishna to perform penance on Lord Shiva to get the Pasupatha missle to win in the battle field. Duryodhana sent Mookasura as wild pig to spoil the penance. The Lord along with Mother set out as hunter and the four Vedas followed the Lord as dogs. Simultaenously, as both Lord and Arjuna shot an arrow on the pig, a fight arouse among them as to who killed the pig. The Lord broke Arjuna's bow who in turn hit the Lord with the broken bow. The Lord tossed Arjuna with His toe and he fell on the Krupa Kadaksham spring. Later the Lord gave darshan and Pasupatha to Arjuna. The scar created by the bow blow on the Shivalinga is visible even now.

Speciality of this temple

The Lord Shiva here is Swayambumurthi. The lord gave Pasupatha missile to Arjuna. Arunagirinathar has sung about Lord Muruga in this temple in his Thirupugazh hymns.
