This temple has its history back to Mahabharata age.
According to the Mahabaratha tale, Aravan is the son of Arjuna and Naga Kanni (a hunter clan girl who was abducted by Arjuna and gave her child). Before the Kuruskethra war, the astrologers advised that a person from the Pandavas side need to be sacrificed first for the Pandavas to win the battle and Aravan was the choice. The Lord Krishna gave three boons to Aravan as he dedicated himself to the Pandavas victory. One such boon is the Koothandavar worship. As Koothandavar (Aravan) wished to get married before he sacrificed himself, Lord Krishna himself took a female form (Mohini) and married him. People here call Mohini as "Bommi" This festival of Aravan is being celebrated in Thudiyalur for ages. During the festival, Aravan stays at a place called Aravan Thidal (platform) for rest under a big peepal tree. There is a small idol of Lord Vinayaka. While the Koothandavar (Aravan) rests, Bommi meets him and hands over the food. Then it is said that Aravan takes the food and reaches the place of sacrifice. The platform on which Bommi and Aravan meet is called "Kattu Sotru Medai"(Food platform). Lord Vinayaka's temple is 150 years old and there was no proper worship and later it became a place for illegal activities. The devotees decided to protect the temple. So, the platform was raised higher and a new sanctum sanctorum with Vimana was constructed and a new bigger idol of Lord Ganesha was consecrated in the year 1997. The pujas for the temple are conducted by priests well trained in Aagama rules. Subsequently, Homams are conducted on every Chaturthi and Sankatahara Chaturthi days and the Lord's power increased every day. This attracted more devotees. Subsequently, the devotees wanted more shrines to be added to the temple. After getting the approval from Lord Ganapathy, the temple was expanded with other shrines.
