The Echanari temple is the most famous of the shrines for Lord Vinayaka. The history of Lord Ganesha's arrival here is very amazing. This Lord was originally planned to be consecreted at the Perur Pateeswarar Swamy Temple popularly known as Melai Chidambaram and so this idol was taken from Madurai on a bullock cart. On the way, the axle of the bullock cart broke (at the present place where the Lord is now consecreted). As the Lord decided to stay there itself, even after fixing the axle of the cart also, it was not possible to mount the idol. So the people of the area set up a small platform and used to worship Ganesha. Later as per the divine instructions from the Kanchi sage (Maha Periyava), this idol was installed at this place (Eechanaari) and became a famous temple.

Lord Ganesha is 5 feet tall and 3 feet in width and is gigantic. "Natchathira Alankara" (Decoration based on the zodiac star of the day) is a special form of decoration done to this Lord. Hence, the Lord is decorated differently right from Ashwini star day to Revathy star day. All the expenses for the daily puja (including abisheka things, flowers and electricity charges) are being shared by the members and trustees of the temple. |
